Nestled in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area, Avoriaz is a ground-breaking winter sports resort that stands out for its originality on a number of levels. Conceived by a group of pioneers in Alpine design and construction, it is the embodiment of an architectural and environmental revolution that placed the emphasis on the natural surroundings.
Innovation
Avoriaz was founded in 1967 by three men from very different backgrounds, distinguishing itself through its innovative style.
- The visionary athlete: Jean Vuarnet, Olympic champion (gold medallist in the downhill in 1960 at Squaw Valley – USA), a native of Morzine and one of the founders of the Portes du Soleil ski area. Jean Vuarnet passed just before the resort’s 50th anniversary on January 2, 2017.
- The bold developer and marketer: Gérard Bremont was an ambitious developer when he met Jean Vuarnet in 1964, he is now a former Chairman and CEO of the Pierre et Vacances – Center Parcs group.
The talented architect: Jacques Labro, winner of the Grand Prix de Rome, and his associates: Jean-Jacques OZONI and Jean-Marc ROQUES, who won the “Equerre d’Argent” award in 1968 for their work on the Séquoïa and Mélèzes residences.
This extraordinary encounter led to the birth of a resort that has grown and evolved over the decades, and one which continues to amaze its visitors.
A Car-Free Village from the Start
Avoriaz was designed as a pedestrian-only resort from the outset and it remains that way today. Both residents and visitors can enjoy an unrivalled quality of life in the car-free environment, getting around on foot, on skis or on snowshoes, or even in a horse-drawn carriage.
The fact that it is entirely pedestrianized, combined with its unique architecture and a commitment to sustainable development, all make Avoriaz a modern, environmentally friendly resort that continues to attract visitors from around the world.
Unique Organic Architecture
The resort’s “mimetic” style of architecture gives it an exceptional character and helps it to blend into the mountain landscape. Inspired by the natural contours of the surrounding cliffs, the silhouettes and colours of the buildings blend harmoniously into the landscape thanks to cladding made from untreated Red Cedar and Larch wood, the hues of which change depending on their exposure.
Sloping roofs and terraced balconies offer breath-taking views of the mountains, also helping them to blend in.
A Lively Resort in all Seasons
The snow-covered slopes of Avoriaz attract skiers and snowboarders in winter, providing them with direct access to the Portes du Soleil ski area and its 600 km network of pistes.
As well as being a world-famous ski destination, Avoriaz becomes a mountain playground in the summer months, offering activities such as hiking, mountain biking, climbing and golf. There are also plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding countryside.
Internationally Recognised Cultural Events
The Festival International du Film Fantastique d’Avoriaz (Avoriaz International Fantasy Film Festival) was created in 1973 by French filmmaker and producer Claude Roy, supported by Jean Vuarnet, one of the founders of the Avoriaz resort.
The event quickly became a major fixture on the fantasy cinema scene, attracting directors, actors and enthusiasts from around the world. It was in Avoriaz that Steven Spielberg first made his name, winning the Avoriaz Grand Prix for his film Duel.
The Avoriaz Fantasy Film Festival promotes the film genre and helps contribute to the resort’s international reputation.
Today, new events have taken over, including the Avoriaz Danse Festival, Avoriaz Jazz Up and the Rock The Pistes Festival.
